There was already a lot of lore in the world of Frank Herbert’s Dune before the Atreides arrived on Arrakis, and Dune: Prophecy is looking to further expand the story.
The first episode had given a tease of the war against the machines a.k.a. the Butlerian Jihad, and a new featurette goes into an in-depth look at the war and the several houses that formed after machines were banned. Check this out:
By the time of Prophecy, it would have been 100 years since the Butlerian Jihad. While there are some that are strict when it comes to the existence of ‘thinking machines’, it would be understandable that a child wouldn’t be so afraid of robots as the adults are.
As for the several families, they each have their own planet to be focused on including Salusa Secundus, the home of the Imperium; Caladan, the home of the Atreides; Wallach IX, the homeworld of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood; and Lankiveill, the Harkonnen home planet.
Like Star Wars, each planet has its own kind of climate which seems to distinguish the kind of people that live there. Interesting that the Harkonnens would be on an ice planet like Lankiveil, as the Dune movies put their homeworld in Giedi Prime.
Dune: Prophecy may not be as scandalous as Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, but the lore is definitely there to match A Song of Ice and Fire. We don’t know for how long they plan to run the series, but so far the production quality has managed to keep up with the Dune movies.
Let’s hope it doesn’t get cancelled too soon.
