Production on Deadpool 2 may be crawling along, but fans of the Merc have plenty to look forward to in 2018. FXX has revealed its plans to develop a Deadpool animated series. Guess who’s spearheading the project… Atlanta’s Donald Glover and Stephen Glover. The duo will act as writers, executive producers and showrunners for the series. This marks the network’s second commitment to a Marvel series, following the highly-acclaimed Legion.
Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory of Marvel are also on board as executive producers. Currently, the network has 10 episodes ordered for the untitled show’s debut season. And the excitement is already washing over all involved.
FX Networks co-president of original programming, Nick Grad had the following to say about the Deadpool project (via Collider):
“Donald Glover is an incredibly gifted and versatile artist who’ll bring the untitled Marvel’s Deadpool series to life with the same intense, singular vision as his breakout hit Atlanta. With the success of Legion, we’re looking forward to again partnering with Marvel Television to create a series that is bold, striking and entirely original.”
Loeb said this of the announcement:
“How much more fun could this be? Deadpool, Donald and FX – the perfect fit for the Merc with the Mouth! We’re thrilled that our relationship with FX that started with Legion continues with what is sure to be a groundbreaking show in adult animation.”
For now, details outside of the initial reveal are scarce. Who will star as the Merc and what the narrative concerns all remain to be seen. Might FXX seek familiar Deadpool voice actors, i.e. Nolan North or John Kassir, or will new talent for the character be explored? The wait to find out shouldn’t be too far in the future. Again, the series is set to premiere sometime in 2018.
