It’s been a while since fans got an update on that Tiana series coming to Disney+ based on The Princess and the Frog, but it looks like the series is no longer happening—in fact, a lot of other series won’t be coming to Disney+ anymore.
According to THR, Disney has decided to axe the Tiana series. Originally announced in 2020, the show was supposed to focus on Tiana’s story after the events of Princess and the Frog. The series would have brought back Anika Noni Rose to reprise the role as Tiana and would also have new original music.
There were apparently several efforts to get the series made, including changes in the creative team, but the productions costs were just not feasible enough for the series to push forward. Such a shame as well since it looked like Disney was gearing up for a big return for Tiana and her world, seeing that they revamped Splash Mountain in the Disneyland parks to be Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
If anything, the axing of Tiana is going to mark a change in strategy for Disney in that they will now prioritize theatrically released movies as compared to original series for Disney+. With Moana 2 and Inside Out 2 making a lot of bank in the box office, it seems like that would be the priority, as compared to releasing new material in hopes that it would attract new subscribers for Disney+.
This decision also looks to be affecting not just Walt Disney Animation. Pixar is also said to be dropping their long-form series like Dream Productions and Win or Lose to just focus on movies. Rest assured, shorts and special features will still be coming to Disney+.
For now, the latest long form animated series on Disney+ is Win or Lose which is now streaming on the platform.
