With the DC franchise expecting a reboot with The Flash, a lot of fans didn’t know if they should be excited for the release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods—resulting in the movie underperforming in the box office last weekend.
What’s odd is that, director David F. Sandberg has fans believing that he had predicted the film wouldn’t do well. In a comment thread on Reddit (via @GeekVibesNation), Sandberg had replied, “It’s not like this comes as a surprise. I saw where this was heading a long time ago. I’ll be alright though. I got paid all my money upfront.”
This started a whole thread with DC fans online (who are known to be a very reasonable crowd) as they started to cry foul on DC co-heads James Gunn, Peter Safran, and the rest of the franchise; but Sandberg did have to clarify that his original statement was meant to be sarcastic. He says:
“Oh no, this reply on Reddit, taken out of context, was made as a joke and is now being read all the wrong ways. I guess the smiley I added on the original comment didn’t do the trick… It was absolutely not a comment on the quality of the film which I’m very proud of”
With Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson not even wanting to appear in the film and marketing having to reveal a major cameo, things have not been looking good for Shazam 2 building up to the release. Hopefully after the weekend, we’ll get some buzz on whether DC’s next outing is definitely worth the ticket.
Shazam! Fury of The Gods is now in theaters.
