John Wick isn’t the only action franchise with a middle-aged lead with a movie this year. Denzel Washington is set to return to the big screen with The Equalizer 3, and we just got a new trailer of him tearing down the mafia in Southern Italy.

Since giving up his life as a government assassin, Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) has struggled to reconcile the horrific things he’s done in the past and finds a strange solace in serving justice on behalf of the oppressed. Finding himself surprisingly at home in Southern Italy, he discovers his new friends are under the control of local crime bosses. As events turn deadly, McCall knows what he has to do: become his friends’ protector by taking on the mafia.
Training Day director Antoine Fuqua returns to direct this third Equalizer film, and he’s been attached to the franchise since the first movie.
Though Lionsgate is still planning to make several spinoffs for their John Wick franchise after the fourth film, the trailer for Equalizer 3 does say that this will be the final chapter for Robert McCall. We don’t really know how this will tie all the films together, but McCall has been going after the Russian Mafia since the first film, so I guess it would make sense that he would still be fighting them off in this final chapter.
The next thing you know, they’ll be crossing him over with John Wick, but I don’t know if the studios would be open to that idea.
The Equalizer 3 comes to cinemas on Sept. 1.
