Before he was casting magic light rings on Spider-Man, Benedict Cumberbatch was TV’s favourite ‘high-functioning sociopath’ with BBC’s Sherlock series. The show had managed to run from 2010-2017 with spectacular reviews, but has since ended; but there’s a chance there could be a revival down the line.
Talking to Deadline, producer Sue Vertue was asked about a possible return to the world of Sherlock to which she replied, “We love that show and there is a future for it. One day. Maybe. If everyone wants to do it… I’ve still got the set in storage somewhere, which is probably rotten, to be honest with you… It’s just getting everybody aligned, it’s getting the actors to want to do it.”

While Vertue didn’t give that much details on the revival, co-creator Mark Gatiss had shared earlier this year, “We’d like to make a film but trying to get everyone together is very difficult.”
Besides Cumberbatch, the series had also introduced audiences to the loveable John Watson played by Martin Freeman. The series was also what made Andrew Scott a loveable scamp, with the show casting him as Sherlock’s kind of insane (but terribly brilliant) rival Jim Moriarty.
The actors have since moved on to bigger things since the show ended, with Cumberbatch getting 2 Oscar nominations and a Marvel role; Freeman going on to star in The Hobbit trilogy as well as a supporting Black Panther part; and Scott making pop-culture history as the forbidden love interest in Fleabag Season 2.
Admittedly with Doctor Strange on a break, and Freeman and Scott not seeming to busy, there could be some time in their schedule for a Sherlock movie. But the filmmakers better hurry or they may lose their spark when the RDJ Sherlock Holmes revival gets back on its feet.
A BBC Sherlock movie hasn’t been officially announced.
