Before Robert Downey Jr. was announced as Doctor Doom for the next Avengers movies, there was rumbling that Colman Domingo (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) was being considered to take over Kang the Conqueror.
While it looks like Marvel is dropping Kang, it does seem like they may want Domingo for something. According to ScreenGeek, Domingo confirmed that he’s been in talks with Marvel. He says:
“I have had a meeting with Marvel, yes. But it wasn’t specifically about anything. They literally sat down and said, “What do you want to do?” And I said, “I don’t know. What do you got for me?” So we’re having engagement, of course. Who would not want to be a part of the MCU? I just wouldn’t want it to be right. And something that is created for me and something where I feel like I can give something of myself to. So we’ll find out what that is. I don’t know what it is yet, but I’m patient.”
Though the character of Kang is expected to be swept under the rug, it’s possible that Disney still wants to make sure that he’s sent off the right way. After all, they had been spending the past few years hyping him up as someone who’s fought the Avengers so many times that it’s ‘all become a blur’ to him.
Admittedly, I am in the camp that’s not too happy about the Doom pivot and I was also just trusting the process when it came to Kang, but the decisions have already been made, and a lot of that Kang build-up has been thrown out the window.
With Domingo being a top-notch talent, hopefully Marvel has something great in store for him. It would be a shame if he was just another villain of the week-type.
The next MCU film coming out, Captain America: Brave New World, is set to hit theaters on Feb. 14, 2025.
