Netflix is set to release Extraction this week starring Chris Hemsworth, and while promoting the film on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Hemsworth has dropped a little teaser for Taika Waititi’s follow-up to Thor: Ragnarok, Thor: Love and Thunder.
Hemsworth explains on Kimmel:
“It’s one of the best scripts I’ve read in years… It’s Taika at his most extreme, and at his best. If the version I read is the one we get running with, it’s going to be pretty insane.”
This actually lines up with what Waititi has teased about the script before. He has described Love and Thunder to be “like 10-year-olds told us what should be in a movie and we said yes to every single thing.” We don’t know exactly what that entails, but for anyone hoping that the silliness would be turned down for the sequel, I think they’re going to be disappointed.
Personally, I’m not a big fan of the direction that Ragnarok took. I mean, I’m actually a big fan of Waititi’s movies, from Boy to Jojo Rabbit, but I always felt that Waititi really wasn’t taking the franchise seriously when it came to Ragnarok; the humor was mediocre, and you don’t really have any of that ‘heart’ that you can spot in most of Waititi’s previous work.
So much for the Thor franchise which had every potential to be Marvel’s Lord of the Rings.
We don’t really know what to expect with Love and Thunder for now, but I’m hoping that Waititi actually gives us a film that exudes his passion. I mean, the fans take these movies seriously, and it kind of bums me out that Waititi himself wouldn’t treat this like one of his own indie films.
For now, Thor: Love and Thunder is set for a release on Feb. 18, 2022.
