As if casting Robert Downey Jr. as Doom wasn’t weird enough.
Marvel is currently pushing forward with their next Avengers movie Doomsday with returning directors the Russo Brothers, and it looks like they’ve found another MCU vet to make a return.
According to The Wrap, former Captain America Chris Evans has been cast in Doomsday. It’s not clear who Evans is playing yet, but with RDJ expected to play a completely different character, maybe the same thing could go for someone like Evans.
My speculation would be that Evans could also be playing a villain, and might be a variant of the Red Skull that works with Doom. If that was the case, maybe the main villains of Doomsday could be variants of the Avengers in the first movie, except they’re all villains.
It’s an admittedly wacky idea, but it could ‘raise the stakes’ for this new Avengers team as they take on a twisted version of their predecessors.
Then again, it’s very possible that Evans could just be playing Steve Rogers again. It would be pretty boring if he was just the same character (and kind of spoils his arc), but it would be fantastic if he was a Cap variant like the HYDRA agent Cap or the old man Steve Rogers that runs SHIELD.
Until Marvel Studios reveals anything more, all fans can really do is guess. I’ll admit, I was bummed they didn’t just recast Kang after all that build-up, but this is where the story is now, and we have no choice but to let Feige and his team cook.
Avengers: Doomsday is expected to hit theatres on May 1, 2026.
