Pixar is gearing up for the release of Elemental this week, and in traditional fashion, they’ll be releasing a short film before the actual movie. This time, the short is a spinoff from 2009’s Up called Dug Days: Carl’s Date, and it brings back the grumpy Mr. Fredricksen and his loyal dog Dug.
Watch the teaser here:
The official description reads:
“Carl’s Date” goes home with Carl Fredricksen (voice of Ed Asner) and his lovable talking dog, Dug (voice of Peterson), who were introduced in Pixar’s Oscar®-winning feature “Up.” Moviegoers will catch up with Carl as he reluctantly agrees to go on a date with a lady friend—but admittedly has no idea how dating works these days. Ever the helpful friend, Dug steps in to calm Carl’s pre-date jitters and offer some tried-and-true tips for making friends—if you’re a dog.
The short actually marks Pixar’s return to form with them promising to release one before every other incoming movie. It’s actually great that they were still able to bring back Ed Asner to provide the voice, seeing that he died back in 2021. Then again, we’re talking about Disney here, so what are the odds Carl in the movie is an AI-generation of Asner’s voice collected from recordings?
This actually isn’t the first Up spinoff either. You can check out other Dug Days episodes now streaming on Disney+.
Watch out for Dug Days: Carl’s Date when it releases alongside Elemental which comes out June 16.
