10. Chosen (Season 7, Episode 22) — Words by Beckie Grunewald
As far as series finales go, Chosen is pretty awesome. Plot-wise it struggles a little bit, but that’s far outweighed by the action, and the final character development. There are a lot of questions regarding Buffy’s ultimate plan but those all go away during the end boss battle. The sacrifice motif surfaces yet again, as we say goodbye to a few key players.
Even though it’s the end of Buffy’s arc, the episode also gives ample time for the supporting Scoobies. We get to see Faith getting a little more human with Principal Wood. Willow shines as her and Kennedy discuss the ramifications of her spell, and Kennedy shows Willow that she is deserving of Buffy’s respect. Unfortunately, with all the awesomeness this episode offers, it just isn’t long enough to focus on everything we’d have liked it to. We don’t get a lot of Xander. And yet the shot of the original Scoobies preparing to fight is gratifying — especially with Giles’ “the earth is definitely doomed” call-back to Season 1.
All in all, the Scoobies and the newly activated Slayers saving the world and watching Sunnydale finally go back where it came from is incredibly satisfying. They not only saved the world, they changed the world.
