David Ayer’s Bright came out way back in 2017, and though a sequel had been announced not shortly after, we haven’t been getting any updates. Either way, the world is still full of potential, and Netflix has dropped a trailer for an animated spinoff of Bright called Bright: Samurai Soul.

Here’s the official description:
Based on the world of the live-action film “Bright” and set in Japan between the end of the shogunate and Meiji era, this spin-off tells the story of Izou, a Ronin, and Raiden, an orc, who work to bring a young elf girl and the wand she carries to the land of the elves in the north…
Though the story has a lot of the same elements of the original film, I think this one is going to be its own original tale. While the fantasy genre is already frequently lumped with medieval Japan, I think Samurai Soul has potential to add to the world of Bright. The character designs are interesting, and though the animation style isn’t my cup of tea, I’m sure there are some who will love it.
Admittedly, Bright didn’t receive sparkling reviews when it came out, but even if that was the case, the world that Ayer built was definitely an interesting take on the fantasy genre, and is a great setting for a lot more stories. You’d think Pixar would have a better modern fantasy take with Onward, but personally I think Bright approaches a more interesting direction.
Catch Bright: Samurai Soul when it comes out on Oct. 12 on Netflix.
