Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri had some great comedic turns with Bodies Bodies Bodies and The Bear (respectively), and the two are now teaming up for a comedy from the producers of Cocaine Bear and Pitch Perfect.
Here’s the first trailer for Bottoms:
Here’s the film’s synopsis:
Two unpopular queer girls in their senior year start a fight club to try to impress and hook up with cheerleaders.
The logline also reads, “Want to get punched in the face by hot girls? WELL GET IN LINE.”
While movies like Pitch Perfect have very modern comic sensibilities, director Emma Seligman (Shiva Baby) has said that the film kind of veers closer to absurdist comedy, saying Bottoms is, “campy queer high school comedy in the vein of Wet Hot American Summer but more for a Gen-Z queer audience.”
You also have to admit, the premise of two people starting a ruse to sleep with women feels like a sexist trope from an 80s comedy movie, but having the two leads be queer kind of changes the dynamic, especially with today’s modern social climate.
Still, Bottoms looks like some good fun, and should be an interesting return to the brand of comedy that Wet Hot American Summer is known for. It isn’t really Booksmart, but there’s still a lot to love about that brand of humor which seems to be dying out.
Watch out for Bottoms when it hits theaters on Aug. 25.
