After the smash hit that was Parasite, a lot of movie fans were excited to see what director Bong Joon-ho had in store next; and Mickey17 was announced with Robert Pattinson (The Batman) set to star.
The movie was originally set to come out this March, but as per The Hollywood Reporter, the film has been delayed indefinitely. The reason was said to be because of the post-strike production shifts. We should expect a new release date soon, but as of now, the original March 29 release date has now been given to the next MonsterVerse entry Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Though the strike is said to be the reason for the delay, some think that this was actually a strategic move by the studio to have the movie release further in the year so it can contend for the awards season—specifically the Oscars.
With so much talent behind the film including Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Steven Yeun, Mickey17 has every opportunity to be Oscar bait, and nobody is blaming the studio if they want to catch that golden goose. If anything, April to March has kind of become blockbuster season with the release of franchise films like New Empire and the follow-up to Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
As for Mickey17, the movie still has no trailer, but we do know the story as it’s based on the book Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton. The description reads:
The book, published in early 2022, centers on a man known as an expendable on a mission to colonize a distant planet. Each colony features one crewmember who takes on the most dangerous jobs on the mission — jobs that will assuredly lead to their deaths. However, their memories are backed up and they are restored to cloned bodies when they die.
The plot sounds very much like Moon starring Sam Rockwell, but I expect some kind of class critique what with Bong at the helm.
No new release date has been announced for Mickey17, but fans are hoping for a release sometime later this year.
