Cobra Kai may be set to end soon, but Xolo Maridueña is set to step into the world of DC as his own superhero.
Just in, we have our first trailer for Blue Beetle, and it showcases one of DC’s more obscure (but fan-favorite) characters. Check this out:
The official synopsis reads:
Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.
Besides Maridueña, the movie also features Susan Sarandon as the main antagonist as well as George Lopez, Harvey Guillen, and Adriana Barraza. The film is also directed by Angel Manuel Soto with a script from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.
I guess it’s also worth noting that the film was originally supposed to come out on HBO Max, but it got upgraded to a theatrical release. It’s a good thing this one managed to avoid the DC purge—unlike the Batgirl movie.
So far, the film looks pretty decent, but I think the film will have to try hard to feel like a different movie. After the underwhelming performance of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, DC will have to prove that they can make superheroes interesting in their own way. They pretty much have a head start after Marvel slipped up with Quantumania.
Blue Beetle is set to come to cinemas on Aug. 18.
