Beware the Spiral in Latest Trailer for Junji Ito’s Uzumaki

Horror master Junji Ito’s Uzumaki is probably considered the manga artist’s opus, and an adaptation has been announced way back in 2019 and has since been constantly delayed. Now the show is set to release later this month, and Adult Swim has dropped a new teaser to give fans that final push.

Check this trailer for Uzumaki out:

Though the adaptation was expected to come out years ago, the series was said to have been delayed because the animators needed the time to “replicate the quality of the intricate designs and detailed line work.” Unlike Netflix’s adaptation of Ito’s Tales of the Macabre, Uzumaki is sticking to the aesthetic of the manga, from the angles, down to the black and white panels.

When it comes to the main story of Uzumaki, there isn’t really one serialized narrative, but more of anthology stories connected by a specific horror that is somehow brought upon by the ‘Spiral’. While earlier previews have showcased events from the first chapter of the book, this trailer gives us a look at other adapted stories including the boy who would turn into a snail as well as the group of pregnant women who become mosquitoes.

It’s all very gnarly imagery, which is why it probably took so long to adapt when it came to animation. The lineart is known to be incredibly detailed, and based on what we’ve seen from the latest trailers, it does look like the show has managed to absolutely capture the feel of Ito’s manga—and you got to love that creepy score.

Uzumaki premieres on Max on Sept. 28.
