It’s still a crying shame that Netflix cancelled GLOW, but star Betty Gilpin has found a new series on Peacock that looks pretty interesting.
Check out the trailer for Mrs. Davis:
Here’s the synopsis:
“Mrs. Davis” is the world’s most powerful Artificial Intelligence. Simone is the nun devoted to destroying Her. Who ya got?
The series comes from Tara Hernandez who had worked on The Big Bang Theory as well as Damon Lindelof, the writer behind HBO’s Watchmen and Lost. The idea for Mrs. Davis was apparently conceived mid-pandemic by LIndelof and Hernandez, with them wondering if there was an app that could just tell them how to deal with problems.
While the evil AI story has been done over and over again, Lindelof says that Mrs. Davis is different in that it’s designed as a benevolent AI—but that could still be problematic. He explains to THR:
“Instead of the AI wiping out humanity, what would that look like?… To us, that felt like the more potentially comedic and interesting way of looking at the God question, which is: What do people turn to God for? How does God make people feel? The thing about AI is it takes away the best part of God’s branding, which is mystery.”
With the current image of the Catholic church, it’s definitely odd that a nun would be a hero of the series, but Gilpin is a massive talent, and I can’t wait to see how she takes on this role.
Mrs. Davis premieres on Peacock on April 20.
