Ali Wong and Steven Yeun are both top notch Asian talents right now, and they’re teaming up with A24 for what could have been the premise of a raunchy comedy.
Check out the trailer for Beef:
Here’s the synopsis (via The Hollywood Reporter):
In the dark comedy series, Amy (Wong) is a wife and mother who seems to have it all, while Danny (Yeun) is a struggling contractor with downward fortunes, but both are miserable — as cued by the ironic lyrics of The Smashing Pumpkins’ “Today” that plays over the trailer. The two meet acrimoniously in a parking lot and choose to escalate their encounter into an ongoing feud that includes gunplay, attempted arson and defacement of property via urination.
The series is directed by Lee Sung Jin who had also worked on series like Dave and Undone. Lee has also worked on the animated Tuca & Bertie which also starred Wong and was released (and cancelled) on Netflix.
Like I said, the series premise sounds like it could have been a raunchy comedy produced by Seth Rogen, but with the A24 banner attached to the project, we can expect the series to be a little artsier—that’s kind of what we get in the trailer, what with all the drama surrounding the escalating threats.
Hopefully we get a new look at the series before the premiere next month.
Beef premieres on Netflix this coming April 6.
