While fans are lying in wait of a Batfleck update, HBO Max is pushing forward with a series focused on Barbara Gordon a.k.a. Batgirl. We’ve been getting steady casting updates since Leslie Grace was announced as the lead in July, and now news has it that the straight-to-streaming film has officially started production.
This was shared by directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah:

Besides In the Heights star Leslie Grace, the movie also has J.K. Simmons reprising his role as Jim Gordon from Justice League; Brendan Fraser (The Mummy) has also been cast as Batman villain Firefly. Rumors are also flying around that the movie will have an appearance from Birds of Prey’s Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett).
We don’t have any plot for Batgirl yet, but by the looks of the set photo, it looks like ‘Officer Barbara Gordon’ will have some police background; which I think is a predictable route—but it’s a realistic story decision.
Though Robert Pattinson’s Batman may be taking the spotlight when it comes to cinemas, Batgirl gives Snyder fans a little hope that the DCEU is looking to continue this timeline. We don’t know if Batfleck will eventually make a return, but it’s heavily speculated that the Flash movie is going to pull a Days of Future Past and establish a multiverse were multiple Batmen can exist without breaking the canon.
No release date has been set for Batgirl, but the movie is expected to hit HBO Max sometime in 2022. The next DCEU property, Peacemaker hits the streaming service this January. The Batman comes out March 4, 2022.
