Margot Robbie may be a punk rock clown when she plays Harley Quinn, but she’s set to be a modern feminist icon with her role as Barbie. It could be a while before we get the first trailer for the movie, but some set photos have leaked of Robbie and co-star Ryan Gosling as Cowgirl Barbie and Ken.

I love how the costumes are unapologetically pink. While Barbie does have her share of outfits throughout the years, the blonde hair and the pink has always been pretty integral to her image.
With director Greta Gerwig having some kind of meta filter when she made Little Women, I have a feeling that the Barbie movie is going to be doing the same. If LEGO Movie can make some kind of meta-narrative about how adults and kids enjoy LEGOs, I think Gerwig can do the same with a toy like Barbie.
Rumor is actually going around that Robbie isn’t the only Barbie in the film, and that different versions of the character will be played by Issa Rae and Hari Nef. The same has also been said about Ken who will also be played by Simu Liu and Ncuti Gatwa beside Gosling’s version.
Of course, this is all just hearsay, but I’m all in for a meta-take on Barbie. Though she did inspire a lot of independent, successful women, she has recently been criticized for promoting unhealthy body standards to young girls.

Barbie is set to drive into theaters in her pink convertible on July 21, 2023.
