The Barbie movie had generated enough hype even before release, and had come out with a huge opening weekend alongside Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, but Barbie has managed so surpass a goal the Atomic Bomb film apparently has not.
According to THR, Greta Gerwig’s film about an iconic doll going through an existential crisis has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide ($1.03 billion to exact); the only other film to do so this year was The Super Mario Bros Movie which ended its run with $1.35 billion.
With Barbie being touted by a lot of “alpha male” Youtubers and influencers as more “woke” propaganda online, this has certainly marked a huge win for the fans who came out to watch the film. It should also mark as a win for the anti-superhero movie cinephiles as it proves that films don’t really need to have a superhero in them to be successful in the box office (just ask Shazam! 2 and The Flash).
On the Oppenheimer side of things, the movie has also earned more tha $550 million at the box office, making it one of the biggest WWII pics of all time. There were probably several reasons why the film succeeded, but a lot of fans are convinced that it does have something to do with the film going head-to-head with Barbie.
Though studios are trying to replicate the success of “Barbenheimer” with the upcoming campaign that is “Saw Patrol” (SAW X and the Paw Patrol movie), fans think that a cinematic clash of two auteurs like Nolan and Gerwig can only happen once every few decades.
Barbie is now showing in theaters.
