With May ending this week, we’re getting closer to July, and that means Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is almost out in theaters. Just in, we have a new trailer for the film, and it showcases Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) leaving Barbie Land to discover the ‘Real World’.
Check this out:
The official logline reads:
To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.
As confirmed by rumors, it does look like Will Ferrell is going to be the CEO of Mattel, and they’re going to be out to bring Barbie back to Barbie Land.
While we should expect all kinds of hijinks for Barbie and Ken when they get to the real world, it looks like the movie will also have a meta-commentary on Barbie as a pop-culture icon and how much she’s changed when it comes to public opinion.
Though Barbie did start out as an icon to convince young girls they could be strong independent women, she has also been criticized for promoting unhealthy body standards, leading to anorexia and eating disorders for young girls. We know that Barbie really is just an idea, but it’s interesting to think of her as a character reacting to how the world thinks of Barbie today.
Catch Barbie when it comes to cinemas on July 21.
