With the Omatikaya specializing in the forest and skies and the Metkayina being people of water, Avatar 3 is said to be giving us a whole new Na’vi tribe that may not be so attune to nature.
In a recent interview with 20 minutes (via The Direct), director James Cameron confirms that the third Avatar movie will introduce us to the ‘Ash People.’ He says, “Different cultures from those I have already shown. The fire will be represented by the “Ash People”.”
Though the Na’vi tribes that we’ve met are pretty attune to their surroundings like the ocean and the forest, the Ash People are said to have a more opposite stance to the series protagonists. Cameron continues:
“I want to show the Na’vi in a different light because, so far, I have only shown their good sides. In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In Avatar 3, we will do the opposite.”
We don’t know exactly how the Ash People will be different, but I have a feeling they will be more open to utilizing human technology. When it comes to fantasy, races that usually live around fire or volcanoes are written to be craftsmen, who use the fire to build all kinds of things (like dwarves in Lord of the Rings). Maybe these Ash People will be considered ‘evil’ because they are more prone to destroying the nature.
Then again, that’s just my guess. I would definitely love to see where Cameron wants to take this whole thing, seeing that he has so much faith in it.
For now, catch Avatar: The Way of Water now screening in theaters.
