Arcane on Netflix just ended after two fantastic seasons, and as expected with every huge show, not everyone was happy with how the series ended.
Multiple criticisms have been coming out online about the series being ‘rushed’ and showrunner Christian Linke just happens to disagree. Talking to Games Radar, Linke says, “When people watch season 1, there’s an aspect to the pacing… season 2 is a bit different in that regard… I respect that people express that [opinion]. You’re right – the vast majority of the audience seems to be happy. But there are people who say, ‘It’s rushed. What’s going on?'”
So far, the negative reactions to Arcane Season 2 have complained that the series may have sped through multiple story points to get to the final clash with Viktor and his cult of robots. What’s more, it seems that the series may have swept the entire class drama between the Zaunites and the rest of Piltover—which was key to the first season.
Linke continues:
“We did approach season 2 a little bit differently in how we structured the episodes because we wanted, as creatives, to take these bets [and] take these swings. It seems like for most people that works really well. There’s some people who specifically wanted to see the continuation of season one in that regard and are disappointed. I’m not happy that they feel that way, but I respect that.”
With the quality of animation for each season of the show, it probably wasn’t sustainable for the series to keep one story going over time and sustain an interested audience. For now, Studio Fortiche has closed the arcs of all the main characters, but there is a promise to spinoff to more locations in Runeterra—maybe with some Arcane characters appearing along the way.
So far, Arcane has set a gold standard for video game adaptations, and while not many people are happy with it, there is a majority of the fanbase that is completely satisfied with how the series ended (myself included).
