The DCEU may have stumbled after Justice League, but the franchise found itself back on its feet with the release of Aquaman. The movie made upwards of a $1 billion in the box office, and the sequel has already been greenlit. What’s more, we actually have a release date for the film already.
As per WB (via NME), Aquaman 2 is now officially set to hit theaters Dec. 16, 2022. We don’t have any details on what the sequel will be about, but I guess the after-credits scene with Black Manta and Dr. Shin is already a hint on what’s to come.
Though it’s great that we have a release date, a lot of fans are concerned that 2022 is so far away. That’s a full four years after the release of the first film. When it comes to franchises as successful as Aquaman, you would expect they would pump out the sequel in the next two years.
We don’t know as to the reason of the delay, but it’s likely that the DCEU is still trying to find sure footing. The MCU is successful enough to come out with three films a year, but DC is slowing it down to just two. After the release of Shazam! in April, all we have is the Joker film in September. As for 2020, we only have Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman 1984 on the slate. If they have a third film planned for 2020, I think they would have announced it by now.
If anything, this release date for Aquaman 2 could be subject to change. Then again, a lot of time for production is likely to lead to a better quality movie. Let’s just hope that DC knows what it’s doing from now on.
Aquaman 2 comes out Dec. 16, 2022.
