It’s unclear what Legendary wants to do with the Monsterverse after Godzilla vs. Kong, but while fans wait for the giant lizard kaiju to come back to movie theaters, he’s going to have a mini-comeback in the small screen.
In an official post, Apple TV+ has announced that they will be producing a spinoff series of Legendary’s Monsterverse and it will feature Godzilla as well as the other titans in the films. Star Trek: Enterprise’s Chris Black will serve as showrunner, with Hawkeye’s Matt Fraction attached as executive producer. Here’s the official description:
Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the series explores one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.
Though the Monsterverse films have been cinematic spectacles, they have been bashed by critics and fans for having very unimpressive human storylines; it was a problem that was present in 2014’s Godzilla and the same can be said for 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. The TV budget would likely minimize the occurrence of kaiju-fighting, but maybe this will offer the show the incentive to make the humans more interesting for once.
If anything, the films have only scratched the surface when it comes to Toho’s giant kaiju monsters. I’m still holding out for the giant turtle Gamera to appear; how about a giant Ultraman?
As of now, no release date has been set for this Godzilla Monsterverse spinoff series, but you can watch out for it on Apple TV+.
