Studio NEON has been known mostly for its dark and disturbing films, but the studio is going a different direction with their upcoming film Robot Dreams. The animated movie is set to come out this summer, and we have a new trailer to hype up the release.
Check this out:
The official description reads:
Dog lives in Manhattan and he’s tired of being alone. One day he decides to build himself a robot, a companion. Their friendship blossoms, until they become inseparable, to the rhythm of 80’s NYC. One summer night, DOG, with great sadness, is forced to abandon ROBOT at the beach.
Will they ever meet again?
Just from watching the trailer, you can kind of get some BoJack Horseman vibes off the movie, but the animation is clearly more dynamic and fluid. Like the trailer also suggests, early reviews for the movie have been great, and with NEON’s reputation with movies, it’s possible this could be a more adult-oriented picture.
With Disney, DreamWorks, and all the other big animated studios stepping away from 2D animation, it’s considered pretty balls-y for Robot Dreams to go for the theatrical release. Who knows, maybe some people will be willing to give this film a shot, but so far, it does feel like the marketing is a bit on the soft side.
Maybe we’ll get to see more of this pop up on the news feed when May comes around next week. Catch Robot Dreams when it hits theaters on May 31.
