The Lord of the Ring cow is slowly being milked. With Rings of Power on Amazon Prime Video and the animated War of the Rohirrim incoming, we have another live-action LOTR project announced.
According to Variety, Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is going to be in the works, and who else to be at the helm, but Gollum actor himself Andy Serkis. What’s interesing is that Peter Jackson, the director of the original LOTR trilogy, is also attached to the project as a producer.
Back in 2009, there was actually a fan film released with the same name Hunt for Gollum, and it was the story of Aragorn as he was prompted by Gandalf to search for Gollum who knew the location of the One Ring:
No official description has been given for the film, but fans are assuming that the main story will be focusing on a younger Aragorn—seeing that Viggo Mortensen has aged up quite a bit since he shot the original trilogy; he even refused to cameo in the Hobbit movies.
With IP like Star Wars and Marvel getting milked to no end, I’m not surprised that there would be a push to spinoff as much LOTR material as they can. Hopefully with Jackson and Serkis involved, we could get something on the same level of quality as the original LOTR trilogy.
No specific release date has been set for Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, but it is expected to come out sometime in 2026.
