Ever since Venom, Sony has been trying to rebrand some of Spider-Man’s greatest foes into ‘anti-heroes.’ They did it with Morbius, and now it seems like they’re going to be doing the same with the upcoming Kraven the Hunter.
Talking to Variety, Aaron Taylor-Johnson describes Sony’s take on his character, who is said to be more of an animal lover in the solo film. He says he has grown fond of the character because Kraven is “not an alien, or a wizard. He’s just a hunter, a human with conviction. An animal lover and a protector of the natural world. He’s a very, very cool character.”
While I can already sense a lot of angry fans complaining about the take on the character, I think you can still read ‘animal lover’ as someone who’s enthusiastic about hunting animals. I mean, surely hunters have to know everything about their prey if they want to be able to capture them.
After the huge flop that was Morbius, you’d think that Sony would want to take a step back when it comes to their approach of these Spider-Man spinoffs. I mean, we know that the Venom movies make money, but they can’t just take every Spider-Man villain and turn them into an anti-hero, and tease their clash with Spider-Man in the next five or ten years.
With the film set to release early next year, we should get a look at Kraven soon, and maybe then we can see why Sony was so excited to push forward with the film.
The Kraven the Hunter solo movie is set to hit theaters on Jan. 12, 2023.
